One mistake is learning tools without the fundamentals: Wireshark and Nmap only make sense once you understand TCP/IP. Another is memorizing commands instead of understanding them, so you can't adapt when a scan or capture doesn't go to plan. And the critical one is scanning networks you don't own, which is where a learning exercise becomes a crime.
